09/11/2006: The SC INBRE Bioinformatics Workshop

The SC INBRE Bioinformatics Core is pleased to announce the first bioinformatics workshop of the year 2006/2007.

The workshop will focus on the software Artemis, developed by the Pathogen Sequencing Unit of the Sanger Institute (UK) This free software can be run on UNIX/Linux, Macintosh and Windows.

The workshop will address the following issues:
  • Installation of the software;
  • How to read GenBank, EMBL, FASTA files;
  • Display of DNA/protein sequence;
  • Display of annotation features associated to a DNA sequence;
  • How to map Blast output onto a DNA sequence;
  • Use of Blast command lines;
  • How to extract annotation features from annotation files;
  • How to generate a gene database;
  • How to generate a table from an annotation file;
  • How to find a motif within a sequence;
  • How to generate EMBL files;
  • How to generate an automatic annotation.
The workshop will be held at Clemson University.
  • There will be a powerpoint presentation of the software on Thursday October 19 (2-5pm) in the Kinard building (room 201)
  • and a hands-on session on Friday October 20 (10am-1pm) in the Kinard building (room 221).
